Scammers in Stafford County, Virginia, are impersonating law enforcement to extort cash from residents. On July 21, a victim received a call from someone claiming to be Chief Deputy Shawn Kimmitz, falsely accusing them of missing jury duty and demanding $9,750 in cash to avoid arrest. The caller spoofed the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number and directed the victim to a fake “bond office” located at a gas station.
Fortunately, the victim contacted the real Sheriff’s Office and avoided the scam. Authorities emphasize: no legitimate law enforcement agency will demand money over the phone.
