Scammers are impersonating Geek Squad, the tech support brand owned by Best Buy, in a phishing campaign that’s triggered thousands of complaints. Victims receive emails or texts claiming they’ve been charged $498.98 for an “Internet Security Plan,” complete with a fake invoice and bogus customer service number.
The scammer’s goal? To convince recipients to visit anydesk.com, a remote access site, under the guise of canceling the charge. Once connected, they install spyware and steal banking credentials. Red flags include emails from Gmail accounts, mismatched phone numbers, and pressure to act immediately.
In 2023, Geek Squad impersonation topped the FTC’s scam report list, with over 52,000 complaints, surpassing Amazon and PayPal. If you receive one of these messages, do not engage—report it to the FTC and IC3.
