Collin County Fights Back Against Phone Scams with Public Alert Posters

In a bold move to combat a surge in phone scams, Collin County, Texas, has begun installing scam alert posters near Bitcoin machines and ATMs—prime locations where victims are often coerced into transferring money. The initiative, led by Sheriff Jim Skinner, aims to disrupt scammers who impersonate law enforcement and demand immediate payments.

“We do not call and demand money, ever,” Skinner emphasized in a WFAA interview. One vape shop manager recounted stopping an elderly woman from losing her life savings after she was pressured by a scammer during multiple visits. Another resident, Angela Harrison, was nearly tricked into paying $7,000 over a fake jury duty claim. “It’s so unpredictable. Just in seconds… It’s all gone,” said the shop manager.

The posters serve as visual warnings and reminders that law enforcement will never request payment over the phone. Collin County has already made arrests, issued hundreds of warrants, and recovered over $1 million, but officials say the fight is far from over.

According to Local Profile, scammers often spoof caller IDs and use real names of judges or deputies to appear legitimate. The Collin County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to verify suspicious calls and report scams using their official Scam Alert Form.

As AI and spoofing technologies evolve, public awareness campaigns like this are becoming essential tools in protecting communities.
