Visitors to Gettysburg are being warned not to scan QR codes found on parking meters and garage signage. According to borough officials, scammers have placed fraudulent QR code stickers that redirect users to fake websites designed to steal payment information.

“The Gettysburg Parking Department does not use QR codes to pay for parking,” said Borough Manager Charles Gable. “If you see one, it’s a scam”. Legitimate payment methods are clearly marked and include coins, the Pay-By-Phone app, or official borough links.
The scam was first reported in November 2024 and has resurfaced in recent weeks, with stickers found in the Racehorse Alley garage and on downtown meters. Officials urge anyone who witnesses someone placing QR codes to call Gettysburg Police at (717) 334-8101 and, if safe, take a photo of the suspect and the sticker.
While some private lots—like those at Gettysburg Area Middle School—do use legitimate QR codes, borough-run facilities do not. The borough is working to remove the fraudulent stickers and educate the public.
Keith Schweigert of FOX43 emphasized, “These QR codes are a scam to trick drivers into visiting fake websites and potentially stealing their financial information.”
